Shops
In Queensway there stands the Whiteley’s Shopping Centre which reopened in 1989. On this site from a cluster of shops on the corner of Westbourne Grove, William Whiteley, a Yorkshire man inspired in 1911 the opening of “the largest British store in the world”.
Incredibly he was shot dead in 1907 by a man who claimed to be his son.The original Whiteley’s Department Store closed its doors in 1981. Today Whiteley’s is a modern shopping mall with many of the big high street names and a food court with a variety of restaurants that would tempt most appetites. Continuing down Westbourne Grove one comes to Portobello Road world-famous for its antiques
